The Windmill

The old windmill in Ryecroft Road is a familiar Frampton Cotterell landmark built by Mr Pocock and equipped with wind sails about 1825 while Benjamin Sanders was miller at the 1841 census. The circular walls of red pennant stone taper towards the top of a tower that once stood 60ft high though 15ft have been lost through decay, while at noon the sun’s rays shone directly in through the doorway. As the efficiency and design of steam engines was improving during the 19th century it became possible to install one that would operate the millstones. The 40ft chimney-stack was built adjacent to the tower in the 1850s as the flue for a steam engine, at which time the sails were removed. An elderly resident says his mother took grain to the mill for flour in about 1900. The dilapidated home of the mill operator was replaced by a modern cottage on original foundations in 1990 ensuring conservation of the tower and chimney.
