The Old Mill

During 17th and 18th Centuries three mills operated in Frampton Cotterell along banks of the River Frome to harness the power of flowing water. This substantial building in Mill Lane contains beams that supported the axle of a large paddle wheel. The weir near the Mill-house was built higher to dam the river so forming a millpond whose boundaries are traceable. The water race from this pond carried a stream of water past the mill to power the water wheel.

When steam and electricity displaced waterpower, mills fell into disuse but this building served for a time as a farmhouse. It became quite dilapidated then in 1950 was converted to a group of 3 smaller residences.

Cogmill remains on the Bristol Road, at confluence of Ladden Brook with the Frome where it is now part of a farm, but a mill midway between these two has disappeared.
